Basic Ferritic Steels

X6Cr17 – 1.4016 / SUS430 / X8Cr17 / 1Cr15 / 2320 / 12KH17 / 17040

X6Cr17 – 1.4016 stainless steel is one of the most well-known and widely used grades within the ferritic stainless steel family. Commonly referred to as AISI 430 or SUS430, this grade stands out due to its cost-effectiveness, good surface finish, and adequate corrosion resistance. The absence of nickel provides a significant cost advantage, while its chromium content ensures a basic level of protection against corrosion.

The chemical composition typically contains approximately 16–18% chromium. Chromium forms a thin and protective oxide layer on the surface, enhancing resistance to atmospheric corrosion. However, compared to austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316, its corrosion resistance is more limited. Therefore, it is generally preferred for indoor applications or mildly corrosive environments.

One of the key advantages of X6Cr17 stainless steel is its good formability and aesthetic surface quality. In sheet form, it can be easily cut, bent, and shaped, making it highly suitable for mass production processes. Additionally, it can be polished to achieve a bright and decorative finish, which makes it ideal for visually appealing applications.

Due to its ferritic structure, this steel exhibits magnetic properties and offers better thermal conductivity compared to austenitic grades. Although its weldability is limited, it can still be welded using appropriate techniques. Mechanically, it provides moderate strength and limited ductility.

X6Cr17 – 1.4016 is widely used across various industries, ranging from kitchen equipment to white goods manufacturing. Its availability and economic advantages make it an attractive choice for large-scale production.

Overall, this grade offers a well-balanced combination of cost and performance, making it a practical and aesthetically suitable material for a wide range of applications.

Main Application Areas

  • Kitchen equipment and household appliances
  • White goods and kitchen devices
  • Decorative stainless steel applications
